What is an AI agent?

And why it isn't the same as a chatbot. The no-jargon version, written for business owners.

Chatbot vs. AI agent

A traditional chatbot is a tree of buttons: someone programs every question and answer. If the customer writes differently than expected, it breaks.

An AI agent understands natural language, keeps the conversation's context and decides what to do: reply, quote, book, escalate to a human. It doesn't follow a rigid script; it pursues a goal.

What an agent does that a chatbot can't

Understands how you talk

Text, voice notes, photos and documents —not just buttons.

Decides and acts

Books an appointment, collects a deposit or moves a lead, not just replies.

Remembers context

It knows what was said before and doesn't make you repeat.

Operates as your brand

Talks like your business, not a generic bot.

How Alosis does it

Alosis uses an orchestration engine (Gemini) that decides which tool to call at each step, and refines tone with Claude in delicate moments. Every decision is logged.

Most important: you don't program the agent. You build it by chatting, and Alosis leaves it running on your WhatsApp.
